Studio aka | Walkers Crisps

Studio aka were given the task of creating the latest in the worthy line of Walkers Crisps commercials featuring Gary Lineker. In this, Gary hooks a chilly winter-gripped Britain to the back of his tug boat and tows it to warm and sunny Jamaica instead (what a good idea!).

Because the commercial is made entirely in 3D, Gary appears as an animated caricature. The original character was sculpted in clay, which allows a real object to be directly manipulated and remodelled as needed to get the exact look and feel. Once this process had been completed, Studio aka sent the head model to us at artemdigital in order to have it scanned into the computer as a 3D model. We then 'meshed' this model using our own software to create a version that was ready for animation.

This is becoming a common technique as it allows directors and animators to hold a real life model in their hands, giving the best possible impression of what the end result will look like, and in full confidence that the computer model will be an exact and precise replica. When compared to hand modelling there are huge time (and cost) savings to be made. And, of course, accuracy is guaranteed.
